Early in his career, some of the finest lawyers in America mentored Mr. Bacal, and in turn he has been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to mentor some remarkable younger lawyers who have become highly respected. Mr. Bacal's mentoring advice was published by the State Bar of Arizona in an article entitled Secrets of a Mentor: How Young Lawyers Can Purposefully Evolve into Good and Happy Lawyers.
Mr. Bacal was one of the first lawyers to have an internet website. A popular and innovative article he first wrote in 1996 on internet legal research (Bacal's Internet Legal Research Guide) was the first full-length article ever posted on the homepage of the American Law Institute (ALI) out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . The American Law Institute published the initial article and updated versions for over ten years. ALI, founded in 1923, is the leading independent organization in the US that produces scholarly works to clarify, modernize and otherwise improve the law.
Mr. Bacal's interest in the law developed from observing his father's role in leading cases concerning copyright and music. Mr. Bacal's father was one of the leading musicologists in the country for nearly 50 years. He had been a pioneer in the radio and television industries, and he was also involved in the movie industry, including being a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scences. Mr. Bacal's father testified from time to time in high profile music plagiarism cases. Because he grew up with a father in the entertainment industry, Mr. Bacal is acutely aware of the need to work hard to try to produce results and provide value every day on every project, and never to rest on one's laurels.
